Safety Week is Sept. 8-11 on campus. With the theme “ASU: A Safe University,” activities will focus on measures individuals can take to help ensure their personal safety on campus and in the community.
Activities include “Shots Fired” training, which portrays actions to take if an armed person is reported on campus; RAD (Rape Aggressive Defense) Training, a safety course for women that includes basic self-defense instruction and includes information about prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance; and an opportunity to tour the N.C. Highway Patrol’s Breath Alcohol Testing Mobile Unit, known as the BAT Mobile.
Also planned is suicide prevention training and the presentation “Sex and a Six Pack,” a play about the consequences of alcohol abuse and date rape.
Tables in Plemmons Student Union from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout the week will have information about Appalachian’s campus emergency alert system called AppState Alert, H1N1 flu prevention, alcohol use and abuse, the dangers of sleep deprivation, and other topics related to personal safety.
A complete schedule of activities is online at www.today.appstate.edu/safetyweek.

New state legislation will ensure that more items are kept out of the landfill and recycled instead. Beginning Oct. 1, motor oil filters, wooden pallets and plastic bottles are outlawed from entering any North Carolina landfill.
Appalachian has recycling programs for these materials in place. Resource Conservation Manager Jennifer Maxwell hopes the new ban will help her area capture even more of these materials for recycling and keep them out of the waste stream.
Beginning in January 2011, computer equipment and televisions will be added to the list. Appalachian currently has a program in place for all previously banned materials, including the upcoming ban on computer equipment and televisions.
Learn more about the new legislation at http://www.busaf.appstate.edu/pp/Landfill_Ban_Oct2009.pdf . Information about the university’s recycling program is available at http://www.busaf.appstate.edu/pp/recycles.html.
For more information, call Maxwell at 262-3190 ext. 108.
