Hunter R. Boylan

Hunter R. Boylan (LES & NCDE) received the first Service and Leadership Award from the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations.  The council is the coordinating body for the Association for the Tutoring Profession, the College Reading and Learning Association, the National Association for Developmental Education, and the National College Learning Center Association.  The award was presented this fall at the International Conference on Research in Access and Developmental Education held in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Sunghoon Roh and Matthew Robinson (both Government & Justice Studies) have had their article “A Geographic Approach to Racial Profiling: A Micro- and Macro- Analysis of Racial Disparity in Traffic Stops” accepted to appear in Police Quarterly.

International Coffee Hour

International Coffee hour is every Friday from 12:30-2:30 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Whitewater Café. Come for free coffee, food, entertainment and great conversation with the international community in Boone.  Each week a different group co-sponsors coffee hour.  Everyone on campus and in the community is welcome.  Coffee hour is sponsored by the Office of International Education and Development.

Hayes School of Music event

Harmonia Baroque will perform Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free. The ensemble is comprised primarily of Hayes School of Music faculty who perform Music from the 17th and 18th centuries on instruments from the period or on reproductions Performing are Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham, traverse; Alicia Chapman, hautbois; Priscilla Porterfield, mezzo soprano; Barbara Blaker Krumdieck, cello; and Michael Bell, harpsichord.

Darwin Series Continues Feb. 25

Historian Dr. Christopher Browning will deliver a lecture titled “Decisions for the Final Solution” Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in Appalachian State University’ I.G. Greer Auditorium. The lecture is sponsored by Appalachian’s Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies and is free and open to the public. Browning is the Frank Porter Graham Professor of History at UNC Chapel Hill. His publications include “Origins of the Final Solution: The Evolution of Nazi Jewish Policy, September 1939-March 1942”; “Nazi Policy, Jewish Workers, German Killers”; and “Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland.”

Art Lecture Jan. 29

Artists Kate Vogel and John Littleton will give a lecture Thursday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. in the lecture hall of the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts lecture hall. Vogel and Littleton are known for their glass creations and their bag series. The lecture will focus on the artists’ process, their influences and the evolution of their work. The lecture is sponsored by the campus Arts Management Organization.
