E. Ike Udogu (Government and Justice Studies) presented the paper “The Antinomy of Human Rights Practices: The Case of Peripheral Populations in Africa” at the 2008 international conference of the African Studies Association of the United Kingdom, held at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston, Lancashire. He also chaired the panel “Democracy in Africa” at the conference.
Udogu co-authored a book review with Sambuddha Ghatak, a graduate student in political science, titled “Imperialism and Human Rights: Colonial Discourses of Rights and Liberties in African History,” which appears in African and Asian Studies, Vol. 7 (2008): 309-313.
Laurie Williamson, professor and coordinator of the professional school counseling program in the Reich College of Education, received a Fulbright Scholar Award to conduct research and teach graduate counseling courses at the University of Balamand in Lebanon. Matthew Robinson (Government and Justice Studies) attended the annual meeting of the Southern Criminal Justice Association (SCJA) and presented two papers: “The Proper Role of a Criminologist, Revisited: Changing Criminal Justice Policy” and “Drug War Lies, 2008: An Analysis of Claims Made in the President’s National Drug Control Strategy.” Robinson also served as chairperson of a panel on drugs and vice, and made a presentation about race and the death penalty in North Carolina as part of a roundtable titled “The Future of Capital Punishment in the United States.”
John Haught will lecture on “Evolution and Faith: What Is At Stake?” Tuesday, Oct. 21, as part of the university’s celebration of the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, begins at 8 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium. Haught is a senior fellow in science and religion at Georgetown University’s Woodstock Theological Center.
Jessica Fletcher, formerly assistant director of University Tutorial Services is now director of University Tutorial Services. Fletcher oversees all campus tutoring resources and the supplemental instruction component for biology and chemistry. Saturdays, Oct-25, and Nov. 1, 8 and 15, 1-2 p.m. – Imagination Corporation explores language and communication, problem-solving skills, creativity, positive self-concept, social awareness, empathy, values and attitudes, and an understanding of the art of theater. This workshop is taught by Gordon Hensley and Anna Ward’s Teaching Theatre and is geared to students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Nov. 7 features an artists’ panel for the exhibition Ancient Philosophy/Contemporary Art, at 6 p.m. in the TCVA Lecture Hall, Room 1102, West Wing. This pre-fall exhibition celebration features artists from Asia, some of whom are exhibiting at the TCVA. There also will be a special artist’s demonstration event at 1 p.m., Nov. 8, in the Rosen Education wing, Community Art School Classroom.
Also on Nov. 7, and in conjunction with the Downtown Boone Art Crawl, help celebrate the fall season’s exhibitions with great art, music and food.
A 20th Century Masters Class! will be held Nov. 19, noon-1 p.m., in the TCVA Lecture Hall. Twentieth-century masters Robert Motherwell and Andy Warhol will be the focus of this presentation and gallery talk. After learning about these artists’ backgrounds, works and processes, attendees will walk through the East Wing’s Mezzanine and Main galleries to talk about exhibited work.
Nov. 8, 10-11:30 a.m. – Leaf Rubbings, Bark Rubbings and More: Recording Textures lets children, ages 4-6, enjoy the splendor of nature. Participants will gather interesting leaves, grasses and textures to create tree collages. Taught by Dee Pelliccio and elementary education majors, the workshop meets in the TCVA’s Arnold P.
