Appalachian Staff Award

Nominations for the Appalachian Staff Award will be accepted anytime before 5 p.m., M, Monday, June 2, from faculty, supervisors other staff, and/or administrators). Criteria for the award and an online nomination form can be found at http://www.hrs.appstate.edu/forms/er/asustaffawards.pdf

Appalachian will present four awards to acknowledge and express appreciation for outstanding accomplishments that do not fall entirely within the scope of normal duties, but are in the nature of a major contribution reflecting credit on the person and state service.

Medlin named chair of Department of Computer Information Systems

Dawn Medlin has been named chairperson of the Department of Computer Information Systems in the Walker College of Business. She had served as interim chair of the department since July 2007. An associate professor in the department, Medlin has an Ed.D. from Virginia Tech and a master’s and bachelor’s degree from Appalachian.

She has worked at Appalachian since 1988, first as a lecturer in the Walker College of Business, then as director of multimedia services, assistant professor and associate professor in the Department of Computer and Information Systems.

Ellis named interim chair of Department of Economics

Larry V. Ellis has been named interim chairman of the Walker College of Business’s Department of Economics effective July 1. He replaces George Schieren, who is retiring after 31 years at the university. Ellis has been a faculty member in the Department of Economics since 1978. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri–Columbia, a master’s degree from the University of Central Missouri and a bachelor’s degree from Missouri Valley College. Ellis chaired the Department of Economics from 1987-1992, and was director of the Center for the Study of Private Enterprise from 1983-1988.

Voluntary Shared Leave

Billy Winters, a staff member in Building Services, has been approved to
participate in the Voluntary Shared Leave Program. To donate vacation time (minimum of four hours), send a letter or e-mail to Vicky Greene in Human Resource Services (greenevb@appstate.edu). Please include your Banner ID Number. The deadline to donate leave is Tuesday, May 27.

Conference Canceled

The conference “Utilizing the Urban Forest: Turning Urban Trees into Wood Products” planned for Friday, May 16, on the Appalachian State University campus has been canceled. For more information, call Amy Sanders in Appalachian’s Office of Conferences and Institutes at 2774.

Summer Craft Classes Now Enrolling

The Michael R. Patricelli Craft Enrichment Program at ASU is now enrolling summer classes. This summer you can take classes in Stained Glass, Dulcimer Construction, Basic Box Making, Wood turning, Pottery, Jewelry, Metalworking, Watercolor, Glass Fusing and Slumping, Mosaics, Digital Photography, Copper, and Basket Making. There are also Youth Pottery and Youth Drawing classes scheduled.

These workshops provide an opportunity for students and community members to have a hands-on experience with many forms of creative expression through learning crafts. No previous experience is necessary for most workshops. Participants have the opportunity to expand their skills, or begin a new hobby that could last a lifetime.  However, enrollment is limited and registration is required. Girls Basketball Camps

A basketball camp for girls ages 8-17 will be held June 11-14 on campus. Participants will receive extensive instruction on the fundamentals of offense and defense. This camp is for players who want to learn, practice, improve and develop all aspects of their game, including individual shooting skills. passing/feeding the post, rebounding, ball handling skills, footwork and back to basket moves. Cost is $275 for a resident camper and $200 for a day camper.

An advanced camp will be held June 26-28 for girls ages 13-17. The camp is designed to work on individual fundamentals separated by position and teach the necessary skills to enhance a player’s game. Cost is $140 for a resident camper and $90 for a day camper.

New Summer Youth Camps at Appalachian

Still planning summer enrichment for your child or grandchild. Appalachian Pathways has added two new camps for the summer. Each program is limited to 10 children, and both are led by experienced educators who love sharing science and nature activities with youth.

Animal Studies!
June 2-6, students in 2nd-5th grades will examine living salamanders, lizards, snakes, and turtles. They will also study both live and preserved mammal specimens, and explore local creeks. This investigation of animals and local animal habitats will be led by Monique Eckerd from the Department of Biology.

Nature and Music: Natural Fun!
August 11-15, children ages 4-7 can enjoy four mornings of music and outdoor exploration led by a licensed Musikgarten teacher. Children will explore bugs, weather, water and trees through this music filled camp that highlights nature’s wonders and delights. Each day will include instrument playing, walking field trips, crafts, music and movement.
