Music at Appalachian

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia at Appalachian presents the 39th annual Contemporary Music Festival April 20-25. Concerts include an “American Music Review,” a recital of music by American composers April 20 at 4 p.m. Hayes School of Music chief recording engineer Scott Wynne will present a composition recital April 21 at 8 p.m. A concert of chamber music will be presented April 23 at 8 p.m. The Appalachian Symphonic Band will perform April 24 at 8 p.m. The Appalachian Wind Ensemble will perform April 25 at 8 p.m. All programs will be in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Four well-known and respected band directors return to Appalacian Saturday, April 26, for a performance by the Appalachian Alumni Concert Band. Some 80 former students from the Hayes School of Music are returning to campus for the event. In addition, the music school’s Wind Ensemble also will perform. The concert begins at 2 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free. A reception will follow the concert. (read more)

The Appalachian Treble Choir performs April 27 with special guests Treble Attraction, a nine-voice vocal ensemble, and student saxophone quartets. The concert begins at 3 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The Appalachian Gospel Choir will perform Sunday, April 27, at 6 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium.  Admission is free.

The Appalachian Guitar Ensemble performs April 27 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Students in the horn studio in the Hayes School of Music will present “An Evening of Music for the Horn” April 28 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The Appalachian Chorale concludes its 32nd season with a concert Tuesday, April 29, at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The Appalachian Concert Band performs April 30 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Retirement Celebration

A retirement reception for Dr. Ron Stidham and Dr. Dan German, both from the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice, will be held Friday, May 9, from 2-5 p.m. on the mall in front of the Old Library Classroom Building. The campus community is invited to attend.

Black Sheep Theatre Production

What if it stayed dark all day? What if the United States’ current president was named president-for-life? What if the future was nearer than you think? For the answers to these and other perplexing questions, come and see Black Sheep Theatre’s newest production, “Dark All Day (and all of the night),” Tuesday, April 22, and Wednesday, April 23. The play was written by written by English professor Dennis Bohr. It will be performed at 8 each evening in Greer Arena Theatre. Admission is $5.

Scuba Lessons

University Recreation will offer a scuba diving course May 2-11 from 6-8 p.m. Cost is $175 for students, $190 for faculty and staff, and $210 for the general public. Call University Recreation at 262-UREC for more information.

Math Camp

The Department of Mathematical Sciences will sponsor Math Camp July 7-10 for rising 6th through 12th graders. The camps will meet from 6-9 p.m. in Walker Hall on campus. Registration is $120. This is the 11th year that the summer enrichment camp has been offered. The camp is designed to actively engage students in mathematics. Students who love math, fear math, hate math, excel at math and/or need help with math, are all welcome and encouraged to attend. Math Camp is directed Dr. Anita Kitchens, a professor in the Department of Mathematics and author of the book, “Defeating Math Anxiety.” In addition, 10 math camp participants will be invited to participate in an Extended Math Camp from 1-5 p.m. during Math Camp week.
