Appalshop Talk
Appalshop media artist Tom Hansell will present the artist talk “Slow Voltage: Connecting Electricity, Appalachia, and You” Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. in Room 114 Belk Library and Information Commons. Hansell’s projects examine energy policy from the perspective of people in Kentucky’s coalfields who live with the direct consequences of the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels. Hansell will show examples of his documentary films and solar-powered video installations, and discuss his work at the Appalshop media arts center, as well as his work as an artist-in-residence at the university’s Center for Appalachian Studies. His talk is sponsored by the Center for Appalachian Studies.
Smoking cessation classes begin Feb. 5

Career Development Center sponsors essay contest for students
The Career Development Center is sponsoring a student essay contest to honor former director Dr. David Ball. All juniors, seniors and graduate students seeking an internship, full-time job or entrance into an advanced degree program are eligible to apply. Two essays will be selected with the winners receiving a $250 gift certificate and an appointment with a personal shopper at a local clothing store. Essays should be between 650 and 900 words and focus on a faculty or staff member at Appalachian who has greatly influenced the student’s career plans. An entry form and more information about the contest are available at www.careers.appstate.edu. The deadline for submissions is March 1.
Jewish History and Culture Film Series
The Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies will show eight films this semester dealing with Jewish history and culture. The films will be shown on Sundays at 2 p.m. in the Greenbriar Theatre in Plemmons Student Union. The films are free and open to the public. Photography Competition
Outdoor Programs and the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts in partnership with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation announce the 5th Annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition. Categories for submission include adventure, Blue Ridge Parkway vista, culture, environment, flora/fauna and landscape. All selected photographs will be displayed in the Turchin Center March 7-June 7 and also will be available online at www.VirtualBlueRidge.com. Selected images will tour North Carolina and Virginia in the year following. A number of cash awards and prizes will be presented. Career Development Center News for Students
The 2008 Outdoor Summer Jobs Fair will be held Feb. 21 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Grandfather Mountain Ballroom. The fair will feature representatives from more than 70 camps, conference centers and outfitters offering summer and year-round employment and internships. Community Music School Recital
Students in Appalachian’s Community Music School will present a recital Feb. 3 at 3 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Recital Hall. Admission is free. Students ranging from elementary- to high-school-age will perform.
Appalachian Pathways – for Kids!
Do you know a K-5th grade student who is curious, creative and would love a great summer enrichment program? Camp Invention is coming to Boone June 23-27. The best rates of the season are available through Jan. 31. Appalachian Pathways is also sponsoring a “Kids on Campus!” program for first through 5th grade students beginning in April. Kids interested in exploring with science will love the animal, reptile and amphibian studies, as well as the cool chemistry experiments. Voluntary Shared Leave

Appalachian Pathways has new adult programs for 2008
Space is still available for a great caving experience on Saturday, March 1. The outside temperatures may be freezing, but the temperature in a cave is always 55 degrees, which makes caving a perfect winter adventure activity. The spring Appalachian Pathways Speakers Series will showcase lunch programs by Appalachian’s Ellen Cowan, Rich Campbell and Karl Campbell. There are additional community writing classes, a new birding program, and career enhancement classes. Other new programs are under development. Appalachian Pathways programs are offered to anyone in the High Country. Learn more at www.pathways.appstate.edu.
