N.C. State Superintendent of Public Instruction June St. Clair Atkinson will be guest speaker at the Dec. 16 commencement. More than 800 undergraduate students and 240 graduate students have applied for graduation. A ceremony for graduates of the Reich College of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences will be held at 10 a.m. the Holmes Convocation Center. A ceremony for graduates of the Walker College of Business, the College of Fine and Applied Arts, and the Hayes School of Music will begin at 2 p.m. at the Holmes Center. Atkinson will speak at both ceremonies.

Peggy Ellis (PS/CJ staff) has been approved to participate in the Voluntary Shared Leave Program. The BFA Senior Studio Exhibition: Fall 2007 will be on display through Dec. 14 in Catherine J. Smith in Farthing Auditorium. The exhibition includes works by nine candidates for the bachelor’s of fine arts degree in studio art. Works in this show are composed of a variety of media including painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, video, fibers, sculpture, and mixed media. A reception for the artists will be held Dec. 14 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the gallery.

A former Appalachian student and Boone native passed away during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend from injuries sustained in an automobile crash. The student and his family were occupants of a vehicle that was hit by an impaired driver traveling at a high rate of speed on Highway 105 in Boone. The victim was the brother of a current Appalachian student who was also in the car. The holiday season and month of December is a high-risk time for impaired driving. In response to this tragedy and in recognition of National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, please encourage the students in your classrooms or organizations to commit to a safe holiday season and a safe 2008 by taking the university’s Prevent Impaired Driving Pledge located at www.wellness.appstate.edu.

Appalachian reserves the right to cancel or delay classes during severe weather conditions. The Office of Public Affairs, or its designee, has the responsibility for publicizing the decision to cancel or delay classes. Every effort will be made to reach such a decision by 6:30 a.m. of the affected day. The information will be disseminated via the ASU home page, AppalNet, campus e-mail, and local radio and regional TV stations able to report the university’s status in sufficient detail (e.g., the expectations for staff members or the time until which classes are being delayed). BARRY M. GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP goes to rising juniors and seniors to promote excellence in mathematics and natural sciences. THE TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION awards scholarships of up to $30,000 for graduate study and leadership training. College juniors with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education or elsewhere in the public service with an excellent academic record are eligible to apply. ERNEST F. HOLLINGS UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM awards 100 scholarships for academic study or training in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education. Designed to build undergraduate interest in environmental studies, foster multidisciplinary training, and increase environmental literacy, the scholarships fund up to $29,000 per student. THE DOLORES ZOHRAB LIEBMANN FUND provides graduate school fellowships of $18,000 plus tuition in any recognized field of study in the humanities, social sciences or natural sciences (including law, medicine, engineering, architecture or other formal professional training). THE MORRIS K. UDALL SCHOLARSHIP honors the legacy of public service of Congressman Udall and seeks to improve or preserve the environment and to improve health care or public policy to Native American groups. The maximum award is $5000. Sophomores or juniors with the following qualities are eligible: students must have a strong commitment to environmental policy or must be a Native American or Alaskan Native with a commitment to health care and public policy. THE JACK KENT COOKE FOUNDATION offers 30 national scholarships of up to $50,000 each year for full-time graduate study. This competitive scholarship is available to students in all areas of study. THE WILLIAM E. SIMON FELLOWSHIP FOR NOBLE PURPOSE is a $40,000 unrestricted cash grant awarded to graduating college seniors who have demonstrated passion, dedication, a high capacity for self-direction, and originality in pursuit of a goal that will strengthen civil society. THE FREEMAN IN ASIA PROGRAM awards scholarships of up to $7,000 for study abroad in Asia. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent residents, have demonstrated financial need, and an undergraduate student in good academic standing. The on-campus deadline for application is FEBRUARY 15, 2008 for summer programs and MARCH 12, 2008 for fall 2008 programs.

THE GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM offers 820 scholarships of up to $5,000 for students studying abroad during the fall, spring, or academic year terms (summer programs are not eligible). THE HONOR SOCIETY OF PHI KAPPA PHI seeks nominees from all fields of study for a Study Abroad Grant competition. Applicants must have between 30 and 90 total credit hours by the FEBRUARY 15, 2008 deadline and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5. Applicants must have been accepted into a study abroad program and travel between May 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009. Following the study abroad, students must spend at least 2 semesters in residence at Appalachian. Fifty Study Abroad grants of $1,000 will be awarded nationally. If you are an active member of PHI KAPPA PHI, or have accepted membership by June 30, 2008, and are a full time student, you are eligible for the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship program. One applicant from the Appalachian State chapter can compete for a $5,000 Fellowship or a $2,000 Award of Excellence for graduate or professional study. THE ROTARY CULTURAL AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLARSHIP provides $10,000 to $15,000 for students interested in studying Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, and Swedish. Students must have completed two years university course work and completed at least one year of college level course work in the language the scholar intends to study. “Bender’s Big Score,” the first of four new “Futurama” movies, was released. The DVD is packed with extras, including a lecture by Sarah Greenwald, associate professor of mathematics at Appalachian State University, talking about math references in “Futurama” and “The Simpsons.”

Many people find the holiday season brings additional pressure to already complex lives. People may feel they need to create an ideal holiday by finding the perfect gift, decorating extensively or cooking an elaborate meal. They may feel a pinch in their pocketbooks. They may feel pulled in many directions by the competing expectations of family and friends. They may be lonely for loved ones who have passed on or for children who are away. They may find they are drinking too much at holiday parties or they may get fatigued, anxious or depressed just thinking about the season to come.
